County Leitrim is small and not
densely
populated which just means that you should
be able to visit most of it while you are there.
At Carrick you will fi nd a major boating centre
where you can rent a boat for a day. It may be
an ideal opportunity to view the world from a
slightly diff erent viewpoint. If you have never
been in charge of a boat before you will fi nd
that it is much easier to drive than a car and
quiet, restful and relaxing watching the world
go past, providing, that is, that you have not
chosen a rowing boat!
There are plenty of riverside towns with
cruise bases and you should quickly be able
to fi nd yourself a friendly pub close by where
there are often impromptu music sessions.
This would be a lovely experience to retell
to friends and family explaining how you
experienced the atmosphere and culture at
close quarters, a truly Irish experience.
However you decide to view the county you
will never be far from water. County Leitrim
boasts Europe’s longest inland navigable
waterway, the Shannon-Erne Waterway, so
do not be surprised to meet many keen
boatmen and women.
If you do not fancy a boat perhaps you might
like to sit by the water’s side and fi sh. The
county has one of Ireland’s most famous
salmon rivers – the Drowes at Tullaghan.
There is Europe’s smallest chapel at Costello.
Do not forget to see the Glencar waterfall.
Lough Allen is in the north and is large and
contains the headwaters of the Shannon. You
can drive around it or alternatively explore
it by walking or cycling. There is so much to
enjoy in County Leitrim, don’t miss it.
Worth a look...
