COUNTY LOUTH
Louth is generally a flat county with a low sandy coastline for much of its length. The exception is to the north where the Carlingford peninsula has a range of hills with Slieve Foye reaching 1933ft. Look also to the south where Monasterboice is on higher ground. The two main towns - Dundalk and Drogheda - both have ports which handle smaller ships. Dunany Point and Clogherhead are the two main fingers of land sticking into the Irish sea. For the rest, it's good agricultural land and plenty of opportunity to explore and enjoy.
Did You Know
The expression 'Beyond the Pale' originated in Ireland. The Pale was the boundary of English influence in the island, Gaelic tribesmen living beyond it. This lasted into Tudor times, County Louth being within the favoured area.
The Irish cigarette manufacturer Carroll's, a name forever associated with the 'Sweet Afton' brand has a factory in Dundalk. This is named after the Robert Burns poem and the Scotsman's portrait is carried on the pack. The man who introduced frogs into Ireland in the 17th century - Dr. Thomas Guither - is buried in the churchyard at Castlebellingham.
